A glume, in grasses (Poaceae) and sedges (Cyperaceae), is a basal, membranous, outer sterile husk or bract in grass flowers that do not stand directly at the flower base. The glume, alone or with others, encloses the spikelet. The spikelet is a flowering unit comprised of one or more florets enclosed by two glumes and is the primary inflorescence of grasses and sages.
