First Year is a phrase often used to describe students' status during their first year at an educational institution (the equivalent of "freshman" in the US). It can also be used as a metonym for the students themselves.

"First year" is the standard term in the British education system, and it is gaining popularity in the United States as a gender neutral alternative to the more common "freshman."

"First Year" is also the term used, commonly in Scottish schools, to describe the initial/lowest year of secondary school and is also known as "S1".
