False pregnancy, also known as pseudopregnancy or pseudocyesis, is a psychological condition causing a woman to believe she is pregnant. The woman may have conditions that mimic pregnancy.
False pregancy is common in many mammals and is a method of providing milk for the group's offspring.
According to the U.S. NIH CRISP thesaurus, false pregnancy is the absence of menses accompanied by other signs of pregnancy without conception, and may be due to psychogenic factors, abdominal neoplasia, or a hormonal disorder.
It may be accompanied by an enlarged uterus, cessation of menstrual periods, morning sickness, and lactation.
