Extreme unicycling has three main subcategories: mountain unicycling, unicycle trials, and street unicycling. Mountain unicycling (otherwise known as MUniing) is akin to mountain biking but a unicycle is used. Unicycles are direct-drive, so one cannot coast downhill like on a mountain bike. For this reason, MUni tends to be much slower and more deliberate compared to mountain biking. Unicycle trials is akin to motorcycle trials and bike trials. The focus of trials is maintaining control while surpassing very difficult obstacles. Street unicycling, the youngest unicycling style, takes place more in the streets and skateparks, using curbs, picnic tables, railings, ramps, and quarter pipes as in skateboarding, freestyle BMX, and rollerblading.
