Energy psychology is not a specific field of study but rather refers generally to a collection of techniques and therapies that are often classed as alternative medicine.

Energy psychology focuses on the interrelationship of emotion, behavior, psychopathology, and health through the electrical activity of the nervous system, acupuncture meridians, chakras, biofields, and morphogenetic fields.

Criticism

Like most forms of alternative medicine, the various techniques collectively known as energy psychology are criticized by the scientific and academic communities for their inability to produce empirical, rather than anecdotal, evidence of claims. Due to the nature of scientific inquiry, however, these criticisms tend to focus on particular schools of thought rather than energy psychology as a whole.

Historical precursors to energy psychology

China, Korea and Japan all have long traditions in energy psychology, including techniques such as Acupuncture, Feng Shui, and Shiatsu. India’s Chakra traditions used in Yoga are just as old.

Modern schools of thought

Energy psychology includes a collection of diverse techniques aimed at healing emotional distress such as trauma, phobias and anxiety; cognitive distress, such as limiting beliefs; physical distress, such as head injury, heart rhythm asynchrony, neurological imbalances, biochemical imbalances and structural imbalances; and spiritual distress, such as existential issues, fears and limiting spiritual beliefs. Although the procedures are different, practitioners assert that they all deal with the body’s energy system, be it meridians, chakras, auras, spirits, or some other medium.

Some techniques under the umbrella of energy psychology include:

  • Touch for Health
  • Total Body Modification
  • Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique
  • Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
  • Radiant Energies Balancing (REB)
  • Tapas Acupressure Technique
  • Neuro-Emotional Technique
  • Educational Kinesiology (and Brain Gym)
  • Thought Energy Synchronization Therapy
  • Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Methods
  • Be Set Free Fast (BSFF)
  • Energy Center
  • Healing touch
  • Therapeutic touch
  • Energy Medicine
  • EmoTrance
  • PSYCH-K
