Effacement is the thinning of the cervix during childbirth. The degree of effacement is typically expressed as a percentage; for example, "30% effacement" means that the cervix has lost 30% of its original thickness. This process is related to dilation; however, the relationship is neither linear nor the same for all women. Increasing effacement is a sign of the progress of childbirth.
