Driving trailers (Steuerwagen in German) are passenger cars for trains which have the capability of driving the train with the engine at the back. They are very common in Germany but have been catching on in the US for commuter trains.

This configuration allows for a very important fast turn-around in reversing direction on dead-end lines, and at stations which lack sufficient switching facilities for the traditional method of disconnecting the locomotive and moving it to the other end of the train. This allows older locomotives and passenger cars some of the functionality enjoyed by High speed trains.
