Dirt road is a common term for a type of unpaved road. It is distinguished from other types of unpaved roads, such as gravel roads or macadamized roads in that it is composed solely of the native subgrade material. Dirt roads are common in rural areas of many countries, although they are also found in some neighborhoods in the core of an urban cities and in metropolitan areas with low-budget maintence of their streets.

Dirt roads vary in width; ones that link heavy industry are typically wide, while private roads are typically so narrow that two vehicles side by side might not fit.
