A diplococcus (plural diplococci) is a round bacterium (a coccus) that typically occurs in pairs of two joined cells. Examples are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis.
In former times, a bacterial genus Diplococcus was recognized, but it is not used anymore.
