Cuju (蹴鞠) was an ancient sport similar to soccer, played in China as well as Korea and Japan. It was probably invented around the beginning of the Common Era, the rules becoming more complicated over the centuries. Korean historical records indicate that several military leaders of Silla were known for their cuju (or chuk-guk) skills.
