Cover art is the illustration or photograph on the outside of a published product such as a book, magazine, video, audio album or brochure.

One type of cover art is that of CDs or DVDs. Most notable of this category would be album art, referring specifically to artwork created for a music album. The term album seems to come from vinyl records which were called albums. Today less vinyl is released for commercial musicians but the artwork is still referred to as album art.

Just like the genres in music there are many genres of album art styles that have influenced many others. For example the morbid and often highly detailed album art associated with death metal.
