Corpus (plural corpora) is Latin for body. The term has several senses in English:

  • In law a corpus is a collection of documents and sources. See Corpus Juris Civilis.
  • In linguistics, a text corpus is a large and structured set of texts (now usually electronically stored and processed), used in the field of corpus linguistics.
  • In biology, a corpus is the main body/mass/part of an organ or other anatomical structure, distinguished from the head or tail.
  • In Christianity, corpus refers to the body of Christ and often is used as a technical term for the figure which hangs upon a crucifix.
  • In anatomy, the two corpora cavernosa (singular corpus cavernosum) and one corpus spongiosum constitute the main internal structure of the penis.

  • Corpus Hippocraticum was the lectures and writings of Hippocrates compiled in 72 volumes by Alexandrian scholars.
  • In the United States of America, Corpus Christi, Texas is the eigth largest city in the state with a population of 277,454 as of the 2000 U.S. Census.
