A military column is a formation of soldiers, marching together single file, one behind another. Column formation was used since the ancient times and was introduced by the Romans. Its advantage is that it permits an army to follow the form of a road, thus increasing its movement speed. However, column formations are very vulnerable as well to frontal and flank attack.
