Chemosis is swelling of the conjunctiva. It is usually caused by allergies or viral infection. It is associated with lid retraction, lid lag, periorbital puffiness and proptosis in exophthalmos, a characteristic sign of hyperthyroidism. Antihistamines are used for treatment.
