Championship or title is a competition to decide who or what is the best competitor in a sport or title itself which is given to a competitor.

Title match system

Boxing and other combat sports take this system. A competitor has to challenge the current champion to win the title. If the current champion were retired because of any reasons excluding losing title match, 2 competitors who are in higher rank have a title match to be a next new champion. Champions are given championship belts by organizations.

Tournament system

Tennis takes this system. In this system, a competitor who won the tournament is called winner, not champion.

League system

---

Football, car racing, baseball and other sports take this system. A team or a competitor has to have matches against all other competitors. This system often takes a year to be finished.
