Unit of measurement

  • cubic centimetre, as the colloquial (unofficial) volumetric abbreviations cc, or cc. meaning cubic centimeters. While once very common usage in English, for instance in the context of referring to the size of a combustion chamber in an internal combustion engine, the official SI abbreviation cm³ is preferred. The cubic centimetre is exactly equivalent to a 1/1000 litre milliliter (mL) The 'cc' is metric in that it uses the metric system's centimeter for each side of a volumemetric cube exactly 1 cm H  X  1 cm W  X  1 cm L. The International metric system standards SI, however equated the definition as that for the milliliter– the official new basis of volume, supplanting the need for the 'cc' abbreviation, and in addition, they discouraged its further use. Its use is still common, if not official, as 1 mL is obviously derivative.. (also referred to as a mil)
