Ballad opera is a genre of 18th century English opera. They are less serious than conventional grand operas, with scores set to popular, traditional tunes – such as ballads.
The first and most popular ballad opera is John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. The ballad opera was one of the predecessors of musical theatre.
