Xming is a free software port of an X Window Server (see X Window System) to the Microsoft Windows operating system. The Xming X Server is based on the Xorg (X11R6.9) server, cross-compiled with MinGW and Pthreads-Win32.

Xming differs from the Cygwin/X X server, although the code is similar. The key difference is that Xming does not require the cygwin library, thereby allowing it to be used on Microsoft Windows without having to install additional libraries. This allows Xming to be installed in a removable media, such as and USB flash drive.

Xming may be used with implementations of SSH (such as PuTTY) to securely forward X11 sessions from Unix machines. This way, Xming can be used to access graphical applications running on a remote computer securely.
