Word Sandwich is an online word game written by Robert McKee in which the player must guess the mystery five letter word based on where it stands alphabetically against the player's guesses. A game consists of five rounds, and in each round, points are awarded based on how many guesses were made to guess the word. A bonus is awarded for quick entry by a multiplier timer; for example, if all guesses in a round were made quickly, their score for that round would quadruple.

The top players appear to be able to solve their words in an average of 9 guesses.

The game is a word version of Hi-Lo, most notably made popular by the Clock Game (The Price is Right pricing game) on The Price is Right.

Examples

If the mystery word was "LEMON", and the player guessed "CAMEO", their guess would float upwards indicating that guess is too high alphabetically. If they then guess "STONE", that guess would float downwards, indicating that guess is too low alphabetically. Game play continues until the player triangulates to the mystery word.

How it works

The mystery words are drawn from a set list of 5,100 common ordinary five-letter words, while the list of acceptable words the player's guesses are checked against are from a master list of 19,000 known five-letter words in the English language.
