Without a Trace is an American television show set in New York City. The show is about an FBI missing person unit; each episode typically follows the investigation into one person's disappearance.

It debuted as part of the CBS fall line-up in 2002. It was created by Hank Steinberg, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The show was the first to ever score strong ratings opposite longtime NBC hit ER -- which, like Without a Trace, is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

Unlike many real-life missing persons cases, the person is typically found at the end of the episode. However, like some real-life cases, sometimes the team does not find the person in time to help them out. Also in the background of the cases are the team's outside lives, such as romances and divorce and how these cases can be taken personally.

One thing that sets it apart from most of the other current crime-solving TV dramas is that, at the end of most episodes, they show information about a real-life missing person. This is not the case all the time: for example, at the end of an episode where the missing person attempted to commit suicide, a promotion for a suicide help line was aired in place of the missing persons report. This is generally not the case for showings in other countries. (Although, in Australia, the Nine Network usually shows information on missing persons in that country after episodes. In Hong Kong, the TVB Pearl showed information of missing persons, provided by Hong Kong Police, after each episodes in the first two seasons. But in season 3, information is not shown.)

In 2003, the TNT Network acquired syndication rights to the series for US$1.4 million per episode.

Without a Trace can currently be seen on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. Starting September 2006, it will be broadcast on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.

On March 15, 2006, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission fined CBS and its affiliate stations $3.6 million for indecent television programming. Re-broadcast 31 December 2004, the 19th episode of the show "Our Sons and Daughters" originally aired 6 November, 2003. The FCC complaint stated that the episode portrayed "teenage boys and girls participating in a sexual orgy," although nudity and sex were suggested through editing techniques, rather than explicitly represented. CBS has petitioned against the fine.

The show is also unique in being the only prime-time US drama to feature two Australian actors (albeit playing American characters) in the permanent cast, in the two top-billed roles no less. A further permanent cast member is played by a Briton.
