Tsang, Wing Han (曾詠韓), better known simply as Wing, is a New Zealand citizen originally from Hong Kong. Having taken up singing as a hobby after arriving in her new homeland, Wing gained an audience by entertaining patients at nursing homes and hospitals in and around Auckland. This prompted suggestions that she release a CD; the result was a debut entitled Phantom of the Opera, featuring the title song from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and a selection of other popular tunes—all of them unencumbered by typical musical conventions like harmony, pitch and rhythm—to the accompaniment of a programmed synthesizer.
Despite — or more accurately, because of — Wing's unique vocal style and marginal command of English diction, the recording proved a success, leading to a number of subsequent releases that eventually gained her an international audience. In recent years she has become a minor celebrity, appearing on such shows as SportsCafe, Rove Live, The Annoying Music Show, and being parodied on episode 903 of South Park. Samples of her music have also been played on The Russ Martin Show, with Martin originally tricking his listeners into believing that Wing was a deaf American woman who managed to earn a record deal.
Wing continues in the tradition of Florence Foster Jenkins and Mrs Miller, and despite receiving some rather acerbic reviews, continues to perform and record. She uses her own money to fund her albums, and although many of them have sold out, she has not yet made a profit. Wing's latest CD is a collection of Elvis Presley covers, though this album has not yet been made available to the general public — only subscribers to Wing's web site have access to the tracks, including "In the Ghetto" and "Love Me Tender".
