Wieland Wagner, (born 1917, died 1966). Wieland was one of two sons of Siegfried Wagner and grandson of composer Richard Wagner. He is credited with ushering in a new post-modern style to Wagnerian opera as director of the Bayreuth Festival. In 1965, he was awarded the Pour le Mérite. He died of lung cancer in October 1966.
