Westbrook is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 6,292 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 55.4 km² (21.4 mi²). 40.7 km² (15.7 mi²) of it is land and 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²) of it (26.47%) is water.
History
David Bushnell, the inventor of the submarine, was born in what is now Westbrook in 1742.
Art Carney, Academy-Award winning actor, lived there up until his death in 2003.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 6,292 people, 2,605 households, and 1,693 families residing in the town. The population density was 154.5/km² (400.3/mi²). There were 3,460 housing units at an average density of 85.0/km² (220.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.76% White, 0.70% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.51% of the population.
There were 2,605 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $57,531, and the median income for a family was $71,344. Males had a median income of $46,889 versus $32,227 for females. The per capita income for the town was $28,680. About 2.7% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.

Westbrook lies in the shoreline area of the state. Westbrook is bordered by Essex, Clinton, and Old Saybrook, where the Connecticut River empties into Long Island Sound. Westbrook's elementary school, The Daisy Ingraham Elementary School, was recently the recipient of a Blue Ribbon honor for excellence. A new middle school was completed for the '05-'06 school year, and it is connected to the high school. An ongoing budget dispute has pitted town members against each other over more than simply money. The honesty of town officials, financial misappropriation in building projects, and party loyalty all play major roles in this angry town's arguments.
