West Islip is a census-designated place (CDP) located is in southwest part of the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. The population was 28,907 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.2 km² (6.6 mi²). 16.1 km² (6.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (6.49%) is water.
Great South Bay, Jones Beach Island and Fire Island lie to the south. Babylon forms the western Border. Brightwaters lies to the east, and in the north West Islip borders on Deer Park and Brentwood.
There were 8,883 households out of which 43.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.4% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.5% were non-families. 11.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.21 and the average family size was 3.47.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $75,914, and the median income for a family was $79,546. Males had a median income of $55,371 versus $35,309 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,704. About 1.8% of families and 2.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.2% of those under age 18 and 4.5% of those age 65 or over.
