This article is about the creatures known as "Weapon" in the Final Fantasy video game series. For items that characters equip in the series, see List of Final Fantasy weapons.

The are entities (some biomechanical and others entirely organic) in the Final Fantasy series. They have been a main feature in the series since the fifth installment. They are generally very powerful and have large amounts of HP, relative to other monsters in the game, and are usually presented as powerful optional bosses.

Final Fantasy V

Omega appears as an optional boss close to the end of Final Fantasy V. According to a book found in the library section of the Cleft of Dimension, it is a monster that even the twelve heroes with the sealed weapons could not defeat; players are advised to avoid him (unfortunately, the library section is after the player passes by where Omega is patrolling). Omega has several relatively strong "technological" attacks such as Fiery Emission, Rocket Punch and Surge Beam, and either absorbs, dodges, or is simply immune to any sort of attack thrown at it. It is weak against lightning, but it's protected by a permanent Reflect spell, as well. Altogether, Omega is almost invincible.

Defeating Omega earns the player a large amount of ABP, and a medal to commemorate the victory. Although the name "Weapon" is not yet affixed to his title, he bears many similarities to later Weapon, and was to reappear as Omega Weapon in Final Fantasy VIII. Omega is also an optional boss in the first Final Fantasy of Dawn of Souls. He has 35,000 Hit Points (which is quite a lot for FFV) and you find him in the Lifespring Grotto dungeon (which is a secret dungeon in the GBA version only).

Final Fantasy VI

The Weapon in Final Fantasy VI was Ultima Weapon (translated as "Atma Weapon" in the North American localization). Ultima Weapon has 24,000 hit points and is a required boss battle on the Floating Continent, and describes itself as being "made of pure energy and as old as the cosmos itself". A much stronger version can be fought as an optional battle in Kefka's Tower. Here, it is called "Ultima Buster" (renamed Atma in the North American localization), and it has 55,000 hit points.

There are also two swords in the game (which bear a resemblance to the Lightsabers of Star Wars) that carry the same name. These weapons inflict damage based upon the current HP of their wielder; the higher their HP, the more damage the swords will be capable of rendering. The size of these weapons also increases and decreases in accordance with its wielder's current HP (and thus its level of power).

Final Fantasy VII

In Final Fantasy VII there are five WEAPONs: Sapphire WEAPON, Ultima WEAPON, Diamond WEAPON, Emerald WEAPON and Ruby WEAPON. In Final Fantasy VII, the word "Weapon" is always capitalised when referring to one of the entities known as WEAPON, much like the capitalisation of SOLDIER and AVALANCHE. Unlike many games in the series, the WEAPON play a major role in the Final Fantasy VII storyline. According to the game, these entities were created by the Planet as a self-defence mechanism to deal with the blight of Jenova. However, once she was contained by the Cetra, the WEAPON were no longer needed and entered hibernation beneath the ice at the Northern Crater. When Meteor was summoned by Sephiroth, every WEAPON was activated to fulfill the reason for their existence, protecting the Planet by "reducing everything to nothingness". A sixth WEAPON, known as Omega WEAPON, was only awakened three years after the destruction of Meteor, within the timeframe of Final Fantasy VII, as an "ark" for the Planet's Lifestream. A seventh WEAPON, the Jade WEAPON, was recently revealed as a special boss in Final Fantasy VII WEAPON Mode, Jade was awakened five years before the Meteor incident.

Sapphire WEAPON

Little is known about Sapphire WEAPON beyond its destruction at the hands of Shin-Ra at Junon. Much like the Emerald WEAPON, Sapphire is an aquatic WEAPON. Before being destroyed, the WEAPON launches an attack on Junon which allows Tifa to escape from the gas chamber. The WEAPON is destroyed with one direct hit at point-blank range from the Junon Cannon, a massive artillery cannon mounted over the town that fired mako-enhanced shells. The name Sapphire is not actually mentioned in the game, but it was confirmed by its database entry in the fourth disk of Final Fantasy VII International and then more recently in an FFVII Sapphire Weapon figurine.JPG Square-Enix.co.jp Shop Screenshot showing Sapphire Weapon.jpg Otaku.co.uk Shop Screenshot showing Sapphire Weapon.jpg.

Ultimate WEAPON

Ultimate WEAPON (called "Ultima WEAPON" in Japanese versions) is an aerial WEAPON with a body configuration reminiscent of a centaur and a head reminiscent of a dragon. After departing from the Northern Crater, it caused the destruction of a forest and some surrounding countryside near Junon, leaving a large crater that was filled by the ocean and became a lake. The party's first and only mandatory encounter with Ultimate WEAPON is in Mideel, when it attacks shortly after Cloud is discovered there. Following the demise of Diamond WEAPON, Ultimate WEAPON hovers over the crater near Junon and can be fought by ramming into it with the Highwind. After this, the WEAPON flies around the world and must be continually battled -- again, by ramming it first -- to slowly deplete its HP. Eventually, Ultimate WEAPON hovers over Cosmo Canyon, where it can finally be defeated. Cloud receives his ultimate weapon (called "Ultima Weapon" as well) from the battle, and the shallow crater formed by Ultimate WEAPON's plunge allows the player to gain entrance to the Ancient Forest without the aid of a special Chocobo.

Diamond WEAPON

Diamond WEAPON emerges from the ocean and begins to travel towards the city of Midgar. The party intercepts the WEAPON and engages it in combat, a battle only available in the North American and International versions of the game. During the battle, Yuffie's weapon "Rising Sun" can be stolen from the monster, which is the only way to obtain it. Despite being "defeated", the WEAPON simply walks away, apparently unfazed, sensing "murder". A short time later, Shin-Ra chose to fire the Sister Ray, a Mako-powered energy beam cannon located in Midgar (originally it was in Junon, and it was moved after the attack of Saphire WEAPON), at the energy barrier Sephiroth erected around the Northern Crater - while the Diamond WEAPON was standing directly between. Sensing the incoming blast, the Diamond WEAPON fired a barrage of energy bolts at the beam's origin, though obviously too late. The WEAPON's energy bolts struck the Shin-Ra Tower, incinerating the upper levels and injuring Rufus Shin-Ra. Meanwhile, the beam passed straight through the WEAPON, destroying it. Diamond WEAPON must be defeated before Ultimate WEAPON will appear, which guards Ultima Weapon - Cloud's ultimate sword.

Ruby WEAPON

Ruby WEAPON is an optional boss, specially added to the North American and International versions of Final Fantasy VII. It can be found in the Corel desert near Gold Saucer after Ultimate Weapon's final defeat, and the player must run into the Ruby WEAPON's innocent looking head, slightly above the sand, with either the Highwind or a Golden Chocobo to initiate the battle. Among its many abilities are the magic spells Ultima (which it generally uses after being hit with the summon Knights of Round), Comet2 and a variety of status effects (along with heavy HP and MP damage) inflicted by its tentacles. It also possesses a technique, Quicksand, that will completely remove one character per casting from the entire battle until only one remains. This, however, can be avoided by K.O'ing two party members before the battle begins and not reviving them until Ruby's fingers are buried. Ruby WEAPON is highly resistant to physical damage, as well as most magic abilities. According to the Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega Guide, Ruby has 800,000 hit points and will drop the Desert Rose, an item that can be traded to the treasure collector in Kalm for a Golden Chocobo. Ruby WEAPON also grants 50,000 AP, tied with Emerald WEAPON for the most AP of any monster.

Emerald WEAPON

Emerald WEAPON is another optional boss added to the North American and International versions of Final Fantasy VII. It meanders about the waters between the two main continents and can be fought after the player gains access to the Shin-Ra submarine. Emerald has a tendency to hover directly above the Sunken Gelnika, presenting a hazard to the party attempting to enter or leave the Gelnika by submarine. According to the Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega Guide, it has 1,000,000 hit points, and, if the special Underwater Materia is not equipped to at least one character, the battle has a time limit of 20 minutes representing inability to breathe underwater. The Emerald Weapon has several "eyes" on each shoulder that each are awarded turns in battle as if they were separate enemies, and alternately subtract HP or MP when attacking a character, the blue "eyes" will drain HP, while the yellow "eyes" drain MP. Adding to the challenge of defeating this boss is its special attack, "Aire Tam Storm" ("Aire Tam" is "Materia" spelled backwards), which deals damage to the entire party (although it can be dodged with a high evasion rate) proportionate to the amount of materia equipped on each character to the tune of 1,111 for each piece of materia, this can disrupt materia battle strategies. Since the maximum HP available to a character is 9,999, if there are nine or more materia equipped on each character, Aire Tam Storm will automatically KO all party members who fail to evade. Upon its defeat, Emerald WEAPON will drop the Earth Harp, which can be traded in Kalm for the Master Magic (equips all magic spells), Master Command (equips most command abilities), and Master Summon (equips all summons with unlimited usage) Materias. Emerald WEAPON also grants 50,000 AP, tied with Ruby WEAPON for the most AP of any monster.

Jade WEAPON

Jade WEAPON appears in a special version of Final Fantasy VII referred to as WEAPON Mode. Jade is the first (technically speaking, yet the seventh to be revealed) WEAPON and was awakened before the Meteor incident when Fuhito of AVALANCHE atempted to use the summon Zirconiade to destroy the planet. In the special WEAPON Mode mission the Turks are charged with not only stopping Zirconiade and Fuhito but the Jade WEAPON as well. Jade looks like a hybrid of a blue-green manta ray and a beetle with a sharp and metallic form. It has long pink and grey horns and six arm-like apendages, three on the underside of each fin. Much like Ultimate and Omega, Jade is also a flying weapon.

Omega WEAPON

Omega WEAPON appears in Final Fantasy VII and is the final WEAPON. It is the only WEAPON that was not activated by the Meteor incident. It has a humanoid torso with four feather-blade wings and three segmented tentacles from the waist down. Omega's purpose is to absorb the Lifestream and unite all life on the Planet into the WEAPON itself before it departs for another world in which to transplant the Lifestream. The Deep Ground Soldiers intend to take Omega for that very goal using the research provided by Grimoire Valentine to achieve their own ends. However, only Chaos (Vincent) can reveal the location of Omega as well as envoke it.

Final Fantasy VIII

In Final Fantasy VIII there are two Weapon: Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon. Because of the game's leveling up system, the Weapon are more powerful if the party members are at higher levels. Ultima Weapon, looking similar to its FFVII counterpart, can be found at the Deep Sea Research Center and has up to 100,000 hit points. Also, Ultima Weapon wields what seems to resemble Cloud's "Ultima Weapon" from Final Fantasy VII. Omega Weapon can be found at Ultimecia's Castle and has more than 1,000,000 hit points at level 100. Ultima Weapon also carries the Guardian Force Eden, the most powerful summon in the game and one of few attacks that breaks the damage limit of 9999 along with Cactaur's 10,000 Needles (must be level 100), Quistis' ultimate limit break, Shockwave Pulsar and the Kamikaze ability. Omega Weapon is this game's strongest enemy, far stronger than Ultimecia. Defeating Omega Weapon unlocks a "Proof of Omega" page in the tutorial in addition to the Three Stars item won after the battle. It serves no other purpose other than perhaps a feeling of pride.

Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X also features both Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon. Both are located at the Omega Ruins – a secret location in the world of Spira. Omega was a priest of Yevon who violated the teachings, and was banished to the Omega Ruins, where his hatred transformed him into a powerful fiend. Ultima Weapon appears to be a servant of Omega, and must be defeated before facing Omega himself. Omega has 99,999 hit points in the U.S. and original Japanese versions of the game, making him possible to defeat in one hit provided that one of the player's characters has the "Break Damage Limit" auto-ability on his or her weapon. In the International and European versions, however, Omega has 999,999 HP, thus making him more difficult to kill. A third enemy, Nemesis, uses the same model as the two Weapon, but does not technically have the surname "Weapon." That said, its nickname, "Golden Omega," does have "Omega" in it, and -- based on Shinra's Dossiers in Final Fantasy X-2 and their classification as "Weapon" being a class of Fiend -- it can be safely assumed that Nemesis would be classified as a Weapon type Fiend. Nemesis is the most powerful boss in the game (aside from Penance in the International version) and can only be fought after capturing 10 of every monster required for the Arena as well as defeating every creation in the Arena. Nemesis has 10 million hit points, the highest HP of any monster in the game. Upon its defeat, the player acquired the "Mark of Conquest," which serves no purpose other than indicating that the player has defeated Nemesis. Omega and Nemesis are the only enemies in the game from whom Kimahri can learn the Overdrive Nova.

Final Fantasy X-2

Both Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon return in Final Fantasy X-2, this time as regular enemies. Against tradition, Ultima Weapon is stronger than Omega Weapon, whereas Omega Weapon was stronger in Final Fantasy X. An optional boss, Paragon, uses the same graphics model as Ultima and Omega, and also is classified as a Weapon type Fiend by Shinra's Dossier, despite the fact Paragon does not have "Weapon" in his name. Paragon is found as the second last boss of the Via Infinito.

Final Fantasy XI Online

In this online installment of Final Fantasy, both Omega and Ultima appear during a long mission from the "Chains of Promathia" expansion pack. During this mission, you must fight Omega first, followed by Ultima, all on an Airship within a 45 minute time limit. The versions of Omega and Ultima more closely resemble the original Final Fantasy V "mech" type Weapon. This mission is capped at level 60.

Later when the players have access to the Limbus battles, you can again fight Ultima and Omega, now in their "Proto" forms. These forms deal more damage and are much harder to destroy, but unlike in the missions you do not have a time limit only battle one of the other, nor are you capped.

After defeat, the Weapon drop pieces of their body which you can trade for special armor similar to the "God" armor but equippable by the job classes who cannot equip "God" armor otherwise.

Final Fantasy Unlimited

In the anime series Unlimited, Omega was an entity whose very movement can wipe out a world. Its body was scattered to the four winds in the form of crystals. However, these crystals "awaken" and take on monsterous forms to search for its 'siblings' and absorb them to reform Omega. Lisa and the Hayakawa twins enounter the pieces of Omega that form its Nail (around the time they meet Lou Lupus), Hair (when Chobi became Ciel), and Fin (which destroyed the Ghost Train).

Ai would eventally encounter the most important piece of Omega, its Heart. Named "Clear," he possesses a human-form and is covered with Flying Water, the only known material to curb Omega's unstable power. The Earl learned of this as he sent his forces to gather Omega's pieces to recreate the entity under his control.
