Warcraft III is a real-time strategy game by Blizzard Entertainment that makes use of four races pitted against each other: Humans, Undead, Orcs and Night Elves.

Blizzard departed from the patterning style of units they made from the first two Warcraft games and follows closely the style they used in StarCraft of giving each race their unique properties. Originally, there were to have been six races with a fifth one being the Demonic race. However, the sixth race was dropped without ever being announced, and the difficulty of balancing the Demons with the other races forced Blizzard to drop them from production as well. A fifth race called the Pandaren was announced but that merely proved to be a good-natured April Fool’s Day joke.

Units

Like StarCraft, Warcraft III went against the obvious clear matching of one unit against another race’s. The tables below only represent the closest approximation each race’s unit has with another. Some units do not appear to have a counterpart at all.

One innovation Blizzard did is the use of the hero units. In previous games, hero units were simply more powerful versions of each of the races’ fighting units. Warcraft III changes that as heroes are now a type of unit that can get more powerful and gain more experience and spells during battles. The player may also not produce more than one of each type of hero unit making them more valuable than ever. Hero units are produced from buildings called Altars. Playable heroes during the campaign missions such as Arthas, Jaina, Tyrande and others are now more aptly called hero characters.

The other fighting units may also be turned into a hero unit if one is adept at scripting with the custom map editor that comes with the game. The Defense of the Ancients custom map is one such example of turning normal units into heroes. One more difference Warcraft III has from its predecessors is that all units, except mechanical, heal to full life over time, albeit at a very slow rate. However, hero units can heal up faster than non-hero units.

Note 1: In the original design, the Archer was the second basic fighting unit in the Night Elf race and would correspond with the other races’ in that level as they are ranged units. The Sentinel was to have been the basic fighting unit of the Night Elf. Pictures, animation and description of the Sentinel was available in the Battle.net website during the game’s production but was later removed. The Sentinel would have been armed with blades similar to the ones used by the Demon Hunter. The name Sentinel has since been used for the members of the Priestess of the Moon’s forces.

The Frozen Throne

Like all game expansions, Frozen Throne has its own additions of units to the ones that appeared in the first game. A new addition to the hero concept is the Neutral Heroes group. Neutral Heroes are not assigned to any particular allegiance except where convenient for the player or for the story.

Note 1: The Dwarven Steam Tank was renamed and upgraded to the Siege Engine.

Note 2: The Catapult was renamed and upgraded to the Demolisher.

Note 3: The Ballista siege unit of the Night Elf was renamed as the Glaive Thrower. Also, the animation has been altered as the unit now throws glaives instead of spears.

Note 4: The Dragonhawk Rider already appeared previously in Reign of Chaos as part of the Elven faction. Specifically, they appeared in the Undead campaign. They only became playable units in the expansion.

Notes 5, 6 and 7: The Goblin Tinker, Firelord and Goblin Alchemist did not come with the Frozen Throne expansion but they may be added to the game by applying the latest patches downloadable from Blizzard's website.

Note 8: Malfurion Stormrage is the same Furion Stormrage from Reign of Chaos, only renamed. His animation is also altered as he is now seen riding a stag. Another note, thought Malfurion and Tyrande are married, they have different last names(Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Wisperwind). Maive also referred to Malfurion as Shan'do Stormrage. Both of these might be explained if we knew of the Night Elf cultures.

Buildings

The building relationships have, too, been altered similar to StarCraft as the more advanced a building is the less clear which is its counterpart in another race’s. For Warcraft III, the partitioning of structures into basic and advanced buildings is done away with.

Races

Humans

The Humans faction pretty much maintains its status quo as in Warcraft II. It is composed of all the human-looking races such as Humans, High Elves and Dwarves. There is now a greater distinction among the Alliance’s races. Humans are usually seen using more conventional medieval weaponry, the Elves use magic as their means of fighting, and the Dwarves are the more technologically inclined people.

Units:

  • Peasant – Basic units who harvest gold and lumber, build and repair buildings. They have been given the innovation of turning into Militia to augment defense in the event the camp is threatened.

Night Elves

The Night Elf race is the only faction that has not appeared in any fashion in previous Warcraft games. They share some similarity with the Alliance High Elven race, and game animation sometimes alternate between the two on certain units. The Night Elf theme centers around nature and its protection and preservation. Unlike the other game races, the Night Elves do not have as many outside allies integrated into their faction and is composed almost entirely of true Night Elves. Animals and wisps make up the rest of the force. The Night Elf faction is also different for having a good number of their forces composed of female fighters.

Units:

  • Wisp - Basic harvester units. They can harvest lumber without destroying the trees. They build certain buildings normally, but when ordered to build Ancients they turn into them. They can't attack, but they can detonate themselves in the presence of the enemy when necessary, draining mana and injuring summoned units.
  • Archer - Basic fighting and ranged unit. Like most Night Elf females, they can hide their presence from the enemy at night.
  • Huntress - Not as powerful as Knights and Abominations but they are ranged units. They can summon an owl scout to keep an area of the map visible to the player.
  • Dryad - Female combat creatures who can poison their enemy and are immune to magic.
  • Ballista/Glaive Thrower - Long-ranged siege unit. Unlike other siege units, these can specifically target individual trees and does NOT cause splash damage.
  • Druid of the Claw - Powerful spell-casting unit capable of transforming into an extremely dangerous bear to cause extra melee damage.
  • Druid of the Talon - Spellcaster unit which can transform into a raven and serve as reconnaissance. They also have a spell for temporarily removing powerful enemy units.
  • Mountain Giant - Slow, lumbering stone creature. What they lack in combat strength, they more than make up for in durability and armor. Can pick up trees as club weapons.
  • Hippogryph - Aerial unit which can only attack other air units but their deadliness doubles when Night Elf Archers mount them. When so, the Hippogryph Rider can attack ground units as well.
  • Chimaera - Aerial unit which can cause great damage to ground units and buildings. However, it cannot attack other air units.
  • Faerie Dragon - Aerial unit which can attack both ground and air units and is immune to magic. Also possesses a very powerful spell used to counter spellcasters.

  • Sentry – Scout unit which originally was part of the Night Elf forces line-up. She makes her only appearance in the fifth mission of the Reign of Chaos Night Elf campaign. She is not a playable unit.
  • Warden – this is a non-hero version which appears in the same mission as the Sentry unit.
  • Ranger – Shandris Feathermoon is not given any description as to what type of unit she is, save that she is also a ranger similar to Sylvanas Windrunner. They share the same animation and headshot but with different colors.
  • Huntress leader - Like Shandris, the character Naisha is not given any formal unit name, except that she is a huntress with higher hit points and damage power and is able to cast an unlimited number of owl scouts. She has the same huntress animation but with a different hue to distinguish her.

The Orcs have dropped the Ogres and Forest Trolls as part of the Horde. The Tauren replaced the Ogres while the Jungle Trolls replaced their Forest Troll cousins. The Goblins also left to pursue more mercenary goals while the Dragons have broken free of Orc control. Warcraft III is the first game to portray the Orcs as not evil or demonic but simply as a race trying to survive a new world and redeem itself from its chaotic past.

For Warcraft III, they are now considered the villains of the game.

Units:

  • Acolyte – Can summon buildings as well as repair them and harvest gold. They can be sacrificed to become the Shade reconnaissance unit.
  • Ghoul – Doubles as the Undead's basic fighters and lumber harvesters.
  • Crypt Fiend – Spider-like ranged units who can also ensnare enemy air units with their webs, thus enabling themselves and other units incapable of striking air units to attack them.

Other races/factions

Creeps

The world of Warcraft is inhabited by different races. These races have never been depicted in previous Warcraft games. At most, they have been hinted at or only appeared in other Warcraft sources such as books and resource kits. Warcraft III is the first time these other races appeared in the game series. Races such as centaurs, murlocs, ogres, elementals, satyrs and dragons, are collectively called Creeps. However, Creeps are not limited to depicting these other races, they also generally cover any small groups that are of the same race of the major factions but whose loyalty or position differ such as forest trolls, brigands and rogues. They are generally described as neutral, not possessing any loyalty to the four major races in the game.

Since they do not appear as major factions in the game, they only appear in the game to either assist the player or to defend their camp when the player disturbs them. They may appear as mercenaries you can hire to bolster your forces, though most of the time, they are a source of gaining experience and usable items for the player’s hero units. Defensive Creeps usually appear in a small camp waiting for nothing until the player encounters them. At night time, they usually sleep and the player can tell that by the letter Z’s floating above their heads. Defensive Creeps also range from mere foot soldiers to hero-like units.

Mercenary Creeps may be obtained by having the player’s hero unit come near a mercenary camp. They also use up the player’s food cap so it is important for the player to utilize them well. However, obtaining mercenaries is faster than training new units. Dragons have also gone the mercenary route. In their case, the player obtains them from a dragon roost.

For more on creeps, see the article creep (computer gaming).

A complete list of the Creeps is found in the Battle.net website: Warcraft III Creeps

Neutral heroes

Neutral heroes are the mercenary equivalent of the hero units. Like heroes, they can gain experience and learn new powers as well as keep and use any magical items they obtain during the adventure. They only appear in the Frozen Throne expansion. Some of the neutral heroes are rogues, some are outcasts, some are passerby visitors in search of adventure, while others do not share loyalty with any of the four major races. The backgrounds of some of the neutral heroes conflict with their supposed neutrality; Blizzard has no real explanation for this, but they do serve the purpose of providing players with more hero units.

In the style of typical tales featuring rogue heroes, neutral heroes are obtained by the player from structures called taverns. Just like mercenary Creeps, neutral heroes also use up the player’s food cap. The only requirement from the player, aside from gold and wood, is the structure called the altar.

  • Naga Sea Witch – Powerful ranged hero capable of slowing down powerful enemies with frost arrows and destroying buildings with her ultimate tornado spell. The only playable Naga outside of the campaign missions.
  • Dark Ranger – Fallen High Elf ranger of Quel'Thalas who returns as a member of the Undead. In the events of Frozen Throne, they have broken free of control. The Dark Ranger's spells, which include mind control, makes her formidable.
  • Pandaren Brewmaster – The Pandaren become playable but only as a neutral hero unit. His fighting style is based on drunken Kung Fu. His ultimate spell allows him to split into three warriors.
  • Beastmaster – Half Orc, half ogre outcast who lives among nature. He is capable of summoning various beasts to aid him.
  • Pit Lord – Powerful demon general. Despite being a melee type hero, he is capable of damaging multiple targets and can summon a demon.
  • Goblin Tinker – Uses a mechanical suit of armor for battle. He can summon little mechanical goblins to fight for him or morph into a more powerful fighter.
  • Firelord – Elemental who managed to break free of wizard control. His spells center around volcanic themes.
  • Goblin Alchemist – A goblin and ogre team that uses chemical-based spells.

High Elves

The High Elves appeared as their own faction outside of the Human Alliance. Many of the units and buildings are taken from their Human Alliance incarnation but with some changes made. Others are borrowed from the Night Elf design and altered. They are, however, not a playable race in either campaign or custom game. They were one of the major antagonists in the Undead campaign of Reign of Chaos.

Units:

  • Peasant – The elven version has a very different animation from the human. Unlike human peasants, they do not turn into militia.
  • Swordsman – Basic fighter similar in stats to the human footman. The animation used is the same as the footman captain.
  • Archer – Basic ranged unit shares the same animation as the Night Elf archers but with a different color scheme. The headshot animation is somewhat different.
  • Priest
  • Sorceress
  • Ballista – Long range siege unit is also borrowed from the Night Elves.
  • Dragonhawk – The Dragonhawk Rider is simply called Dragonhawk in its first appearance.
  • Ranger – archer unit with greater damage power and hit points than normal archers. Represented by the character Sylvannas Windrunner.
  • Archmage

Buildings:

  • Castle
  • Farm – Elven farms have a somewhat different design from the human version. And as opposed to having a single design, there are two types, one being a single-story building and another that looks like a tower.
  • Barracks
  • Arcane Sanctum
  • Gryphon Aviary
  • Arcane Tower

Blackrock/Chaos Orcs

There exists in the Reign of Chaos game, two groups of Orcs whose lineup differs from the one in the gameplay. The first is the Blackrock Orcs who still continue to worship demons despite falling out of favor and the second group is the Chaos Orcs. Essentially, both groups take units from the gameplay Orcs but removed all non-Orc allies. Additionally, Both groups have almost the same line-up, the difference being that the Chaos Orcs drank demon blood and have a red skin color and alterations in armor and hit points.

  • Peon
  • Grunt
  • Raider
  • Warlock – Instead of the Shaman, both groups have the Warlock as the major spellcaster unit. It practises demonic spells
  • Catapult
  • Blademaster

The Blackrock Orcs have the above units and additionally:

  • Troll Headhunter
  • Dragon – Red dragon similar to the one in Warcraft II
  • Far Seer
  • Ogre Magi

Both factions have the following buildings:

  • Great Hall/Stronghold/Fortress
  • Pig Farm/Burrow
  • Barracks
  • Beastiary
  • War Mill

The Blackrock and Chaos Orcs differ in their food producing buildings. Blackrocks use pig farms as they did in Warcraft II. The Chaos Orcs use burrows as the game Orcs do. And since the Blackrocks continue to use dragons, they have an additional building, the dragon roost, to produce them.

Demons

Originally designed as the fifth race in the Warcraft III gameplay, some of the concepts for the demonic faction were eventually included particularly in the campaign missions. The demon units tend to be more powerful and larger, often having greater hit points and able to inflict more damage to the enemy. Unlike most other races, they do not have buildings for the player to produce more of. They are often summoned by a spellcaster such as the Dreadlord or brought in by a dimensional portal. The player is able to control some of the demon units during the Undead campaign in Reign of Chaos.

  • Felhound – Basic fighting unit capable of inflicting mana burn that reduces the mana of the enemy.
  • Doom Guard – Elite trooper of the demon forces, capable of casting a rain of fiery hail.
  • Infernal – Green fiery golem immune to magic spells.
  • Pit Lord – Hero unit, the same as the one included in the neutral heroes. The character Mannoroth is the representative in Reign of Chaos.
  • Warlock – The hero designation the character Archimonde is described as.

Corrupted Ancients

According to the game storyline, the Corrupted Ancients were a group of Night Elves who broke off and allied themselves with the Demons. They eventually evolved into satyrs though they retained much of Night Elf structure, that is they also use the same buildings as Night Elves do. The Corrupted Ancients appear as one of the antagonists in the Night Elf campaign in Reign of Chaos. Like the High Elves, they are not a playable race in either the campaign or custom game. The satyrs also appear as members of the Creeps. Skeletons make up the other half of the Corrupted force. This group is not playable and serves as antagonists in the Night Elf campaign in Reign of Chaos.

Units:

  • Skeleton Warrior
  • Skeletal Marksman – Skeleton archer.
  • Burning Archer – Skeleton archer that shoot burning arrows.
  • Giant Skeleton Warrior – Slightly larger warrior.

  • Satyr – Basic fighter unit.
  • Satyr Soulstealer – Spellcaster unit capable of depleting the opponent's mana and raise the dead as skeleton forces.

  • Satyr Trickster
  • Corrupt Treant – Make up a good portion of the Corrupted Ancients' forces.
  • Poison Treant – Can immobilize its opponent with vines and strike with envenomed spikes.
  • Plague Treant – Can also immobilize its opponent with vines and battles while exhaling a disease cloud that infects the enemy.
  • Skeleton King – Largest skeleton warrior in the group and one with the highest hit points, 1500.
  • Satyr Hellcaller – Deadly spellcaster that can reanimate the dead.

Buildings:

  • Corrupted Tree of Ages
  • Corrupted Ancient of War
  • Corrupted Moon Well
  • Corrupted Ancient Protector

Naga

The Naga is a race that is descended from the Night Elves. They first appeared in the Frozen Throne expansion. They are very different from how they are presented from the other races in the game. They only appear in the Frozen Throne campaign missions and are not present in multi-player melee maps. In the campaign, the player is actually able to gain control of the Naga in several missions. This control is up to the point where the player is able to produce more of them and even construct buildings unique to the Naga, as well as unit upgrades. The Naga is the only race able to travel through deep bodies of water. It is also the only race whose buildings can be constructed in shallow waters.

Units:

  • Mur'gul Slave - builder and harvester unit.
  • Mur'gul Reaver - the Naga's basic fighter unit.
  • Snap Dragon - lizard-like ranged unit that spits acid from its mouth.

  • Shrine of Azshara - building where Sirens and Couatls are trained.
  • Spawning Grounds - allows the player to create Myrmidons, Royal Guards, Turtles, and Snap Dragons.
  • Altar of the Depths - building from which the Naga hero is summoned.
  • Tidal Guardian - Naga defense tower unit.

Draenei

The Draenei are a campaign-only race. They are depicted as living in Draenor, with the Orcs. They were living peacefully, until the Eredar Warlock Kiljae'den turned the Orcs to using demonic magic, resulting in the near-extinction of the Draenei. Note that Draenei are invisible to enemies, except when attacking. (This only applies in the final Chapter of the Human Campaign, when you get to control Akama)

Units:

  • Draenei Slave - Serves as the basic unit of the Draenei
  • Draenei Warrior - Basic fighting unit.
  • Draenei Harbinger - A more elite unit than the Warrior, which only differs in attacking power.
  • Draenei Vindicator - Melee unit effective against buildings.

Heroes:

  • Seer - Akama, the Cheiftain/leader of the Draenei, joins Illidan in Outland to take revenge upon the orcs. He has powers similar to the Far Seer of the Orcs.

Blood Elves

The once Proud Elves of Quel'thalas are now homeless refugees under the Ironfist of Grand Marshal Garathos. Now renamed the Blood Elves in homage to their lost kin, Kael'thas, the Prince and Blood Mage of the Blood Elves, is going to free his people with the help of the Naga and their lord Illidan. Blood Elves use units previously in the High Elves Army. However they have lost the use of certain units and most of the heroes the High Elves had. Blood Elves are apart of the Alliance and only playable as a separate army in Campaigns:

Troops:

  • Worker - An elven architect with a short temper and a big mouth. Same as the Orcish Peon.
  • Swordsman - Light Melee unit, the same as the Alliance's footmen.
  • Archer - An elven archer from Warcraft II. Same as the Night Elf Archer(near same model and sound) but without the Shadowmeld ability.
  • Priest - The Priest come to only heal those in need.
  • Sorcoress - A seductive female elf that loves to turn her enemies into "cute" creatures.
  • Spell Breaker - The powerful and magic-hungry Spell Breaker dissipate enemy spells and steals their summoned units in addition into turning enemy mana into combustable bombs.
  • Dragonhawk Rider - Same as the Alliance Dragonhawk Rider.

Buildings:

Other than the Archer and Swordsman, who are trained in the barracks, all other units are trained in their respective buildings in the Alliance. The worker is trained in the town hall/keep/castle. Any other buildings not required for training the above units(except for towers and the alter for obvious reasons) are not available to the Blood Elves.

Heros:

  • Blood Mage - Prince Kael'Thas, the ruler of the Blood Elves and the right hand of Illidan. The young prince is desperately trying to save his race from extinction. Apparently he has some sort of quarrel with Arthas from the past.
