Wantagh (pronounced /WAHN-taw/) is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 18,971 at the 2000 census.

Wantagh is in the southeastern part of the Town of Hempstead. Wantagh School District consists of 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school; however, residents of North Wantagh are considered part of the Levittown School District and residents in a small area in the eastern part of the hamlet are considered part of the Seaford School District. Wantagh School District is the only in New York State to have all of its schools recognized as United States Department of Education National Schools of Excellence.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.7 km² (4.1 mi²). 9.9 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (7.25%) is water.

Jones Beach State Park is located in Wantagh.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 18,971 people, 6,179 households, and 5,215 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,907.5/km² (4,936.3/mi²). There were 6,250 housing units at an average density of 628.4/km² (1,626.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.75% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.89% Asian, 0.34% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.26% of the population.

There were 6,179 households out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.8% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.6% were non-families. 13.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.37.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $83,916, and the median income for a family was $91,019. Males had a median income of $61,162 versus $40,403 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $31,817. About 1.2% of families and 1.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.1% of those under age 18 and 1.9% of those age 65 or over.
