WWF Invasion

WWF Invasion (alternatively billed as Invasion: WCW/ECW vs. WWF ) was a PPV event that took place on July 22, 2001 in Cleveland at the Gund Arena. It featured WWF, WCW and ECW wrestlers. The two official songs are "Creature Discomfort" (Original Production) and "Fight Song", by Marilyn Manson.

History

Prior to the Invasion storyline, the July PPV event was titled Fully Loaded, which would help build storylines until SummerSlam. However, as a result of the ongoing Invasion storyline, which would have seen a resurgent WCW and/or ECW promotions under the auspices of WWF should it be a success, the July PPV was renamed Invasion by Linda McMahon, with the idea that every match on the card would have WWF wrestlers take on members of the WCW/ECW Alliance.

At the time, the Alliance roster (largely drawn from WCW influences) had its parallels with the WWF roster: both sides had head referees (Earl Hebner for the WWF, Nick Patrick for WCW) that had routinely interfered with each other's calls. Both sides had top Divas (Trish Stratus and Lita for the WWF, Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson for WCW) that tried to make their impressions on the audience. Both sides had commentators on Raw and SmackDown! that presented their faction's point of view (Jim Ross and Michael Cole for the WWF, Paul Heyman and Tazz for the Alliance). Finally, both sides had top championships that drew parallels with each other (eg. the WWF Championship and the WCW Championship).

The wrestlers for each faction were clearly marked with either the WWF logo or a new WCW or ECW logo to indicate their promotional allegiance, something which would continue until the storyline's conclusion at Survivor Series the same year.

WWF Hardcore Championship: Rob Van Dam (ECW) def. Champion Jeff Hardy (WWF) to win the title.
