You have probably come here from a link on a protected page. Depending on its level of protection, editing on the page has been Semi-protection policy to either registered users or administrators. We regret any inconvenience this may cause — we strive to protect pages only when absolutely necessary and to unprotect them as soon as possible. We usually only protect pages that, for whatever reason, show themselves to be particularly prone to vandalism. If you wish to experiment with editing Wikipedia, please try the Sandbox.

With the exception of several pages which are permanently protected — namely those in the MediaWiki namespace which provide text for the user interface, system administration and copyright/license pages, and the Main Page, which is highly visible, making it a vulnerable target for vandalism — you should be able to edit the page when it is unprotected in a short while. In the meantime, please feel free to discuss the changes you want to make on the talk page of the article in question.

If you discover a page that appears to have been protected and then forgotten about, you can request to have it unprotected by posting on Requests for page protection. If a page has only recently been protected, it may be best to wait a few days first, unless some resolution has been reached on the talk page.
