The Vow of Obedience is one of the three vows that monks and nuns must take to enter an order, such as in the Benedictine order, in accord with the rule of Saint Benedictine. It is required because they are voluntarily undertaking to fulfill the counsels of perfection.
The obedience is that general submission which religious vow to God, and voluntarily promise to their superiors, in order to be directed by them in the ways of perfection according to the purpose and constitutions of their order.
