Volme is a river that flows to the Ruhr. It is 49.8km long. 21.3 of that flows through Hagen.
It begins at 480 m above sea level at the southeastern part of the Ruhr area and flows through the municipalities of Meinerzhagen and Hagen and ends at 91 m above sea level emptying into the Ruhr. In the city of Hagen, the Volme is predominantly canalized, and will be renovated in 2004.
In the pre-industrial age, numerous mills, smiths, and foundries arose along the Volme, from which the iron industry developed during the 19th and the 20th centuries.
