is a reptilian daikaiju that was first featured in the unsucessful 1958 Toho film Varan the Unbelievable.

Varan the Unbelievable was originally going to be a television show, but that was a lost project.

When a two Red Trimmed Off-White butterflies that are native to Japan are found in Siberia, there is an expedition that intended to return the insects back to the Kitami river which was their original habitat. The expedition members are suddenly and tragically murdered by some unknown cause, so a second expedition is attempted. The villagers who live in the village near the river say that it was a deity they worshipped who inhabbitted the river called Varan. When a young boy runs from the village in pursuit of his dog, the expedition members try to follow him, but the priest tells them that the act will stir the wrath of Varan. The team ignores the priest and follow the youth. Shortly afterwards, a huge, four-legged reptilian animal shows up. Varan had appeared. The towering titan imediately attacked the teamand they were forced to flee. Varan chases them and arrives at the village. The creature began to wreak haovc on the village, killing all who lived inside. The miltary finds out about Varan and makes several attempts to put an end to the threat. They lure the kaiju to Haneda airport and use two bombs as a bait. Varan eats the bombs and they eventually detonate and seemingly deafeat him. Miracuolously, Varan survies and appears in the man-made island, Monster Island. In 1999, aliens took control of Varan and the other monsters of the island and use them as a part of their invasion. However, the humans severed the mind control and freed the kaiju. Varan was then sent to deafeat King Ghidorah, but he watched the battle from the sidelines along with Manda and Baragon. At the end of the battle, he and the rest of the kaiju returned to Monster Island, where they lived peacefully to this day.

Before the movie, Godzilla: Final Wars began, it showed a stock footage from Varan the Unbelievable as a part of showing some of the dangerous kaijus that have attacked humans instead of fighting each other.

Lost Projects


In the lost project, return of King Ghidorah, Varan was to be featured, but that became a lost project. In the movie, Godzilla, Anguirus, and Varan: Giant Monsters all out Attack, the first draft of GMK, Varan was to have been one of the three guardian Yamatos, but he was unpopular, so he and Anguirus were replaced with Ghidorah and Mothra.

Varan has made appearances in the video games Godzilla, Monster of Monsters, and Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
