A VU meter (Volume Unit) is often included in domestic analog audio equipment to display a signal level. It is intentionally a "slow" measurement, completely ignoring peaks and troughs under 300 ms in duration. It was developed for measuring phone lines. 0 VU is equal to +4 dBm (or 1.228 volts RMS across a 600 ohm load).
