A VCR/DVD combo is a multiplex device that was introduced to the A/V market for reduction of space on A/V furniture (e.g. entertainment center) for those with an expansive library of VHS and DVDs.

This innovation, started around 1999, is sometimes criticized as not as high in quality as separate components. The product also has a disadvantage in that if just one facet of it becomes unusable, the entire unit must be replaced or repaired.

More recently the AV manufacturers have combined DVD with TV, VCR and Home Theatre Systems. These DVD/TV combos are now considered to have equal quality to those of the seperate componants and tend to be more affordable.
