The University of Ulm (German: Universität Ulm) is a public university in the city of Ulm, in the South German state of Baden-Württemberg. The university was founded in 1967 and focuses on natural sciences, medicine and the engineering sciences, mathematics/ economics and computer science. With over 7,000 students, it is one of the smaller universities in Germany.

Concept and history

The university was founded in the 1960s, a time of social change and reforms in Germany. The German state of Baden-Württemberg at that time already disposed of several old, renowned universities in Heidelberg (founded in 1386), Freiburg (1457) and Tübingen (1477). The idea was to create a university with a new approach in both research and teaching. An important concept since the foundation of the university has always been to promote inderdisciplinarity. In the decades following the foundation, the spectrum of subjects has steadily been extended, and the university has grown significantly.

An important step in combining the strength of industrial and academic research was the realization of the idea of a "science city" around the main university campus. Research centers of companies like DaimlerChrysler, Nokia, and Siemens have been established at the site, in addition to institutes of the university focusing on applied research. The university today is recognized for its research, featuring ten "Special Areas of Research" (German: Sonderforschungsbereiche), which are established on a competitive basis by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG).

As Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in 1879, it was suggested several times that the university be named after him. Given the short time Albert Einstein spent in Ulm and his relatively weak connection to the city of his birth, it was however decided not to name the university after him. It is also uncertain if Einstein himself would have supported the naming, as he had a very difficult relationship to Germany during and after the Nazi dictatorship (1933-45), and for example never set foot again on German soil even after the establishment of a democratic and peaceful state in West Germany after 1945. The street on which the main buildings of the University of Ulm are located - and thus, the physical address of the university - is, however, called Albert-Einstein-Allee in honor of the great physicist.

Structure

The university is composed of five faculties:
  • Faculty of Natural Science
  • Medical Faculty
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Economics
  • Faculty of Engineering Science
  • Faculty of Computer Science
Associated with the Medical Faculty is a comprehensive University Hospital with all medical specialties.

University Library

The Library of the University of Ulm is located in a new building on the main campus and features close to 1 million volumes.
