The University of Bordeaux is an organisation consisting of four autonomous universities:

• Université Bordeaux 1 ^* - natural science
• Université Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 ^* - medicine and life sciences
• Université Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux 3 ^* - the liberal arts
• Université Montesquieu Bordeaux IV ^* - political science and law

Bordeaux 2 is located in the city centre, while the other three were relocated in the 1960s to Domaine Universitaire, a vast campus located in the communes of Talence, Pessac and Gradignan. Among the most well-known institutions are:

• Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux ^* (Political Studies Institute, commonly known as "Sciences Po"), an elite school for future policy-makers,
  
• Ecole Nationale de la Magistrature (National School of Magistrature) ^*,
  
• Law School of the University Bordeaux IV ^*, often described as the best of the country, and certainly one of the best,
  
• Bordeaux Ecole de Management (Bordeaux Business School) ^*, one of the best of its kind
• École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers
• Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique (LaBRI) ^*, a computer science research center
