The University of Bergen (Universitetet i Bergen) is located in Bergen, Norway. Although founded as late as 1946, academic activity had taken place at Bergen Museum as far back as 1825. The university today caters for more than 16,000 students. It is one of six universities in Norway, the other five being the University of Oslo, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, the University of Tromsø, the University of Stavanger and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

Home students (European citizens) do not pay fees to the university. One pays the welfare organisation controlled by the students a fee to be granted the right to take an exam. This fee is about 800 NOK (approx. 120 USD) per year, and provides access to several services, including refunds of many medical expenses and less expensive accommodation.
