In the Trendelenburg position the body is laid flat on the back with the head lower than the pelvis, in contrast to the reverse trendelenburg position. This is a standard position used in surgery in gynecology. It allows better access to the pelvic organs as intestines move cranially by gravity. It was named for the German surgeon Friedrich Trendelenburg.
