The term Toolkit for User Innovation was introduced by Eric von Hippel, professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Innovative projects often fail because the voice of the customer is not sufficiently heard during the product development process. Thereby, one of the most crucial success factors is to fulfil the customer requirements. A big problem that arises when it comes to the design of a new product is the translation of customer requirements.

Toolkits for user innovation try to integrate customer input into the product development process and optimize the interface between manufacturer and customer. Product innovation and design tasks are shifting from the locus of the manufacturer to the locus of the customer.
