Gameplay
Gameplay in
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is similar to that of previous games. The player skates around in a 3D environment modeled after various cities and attempts to complete various goals. Most goals involve skating on or over various objects or performing combos. Scores are calculated by adding the sum of the point value of each trick strung together in a combo and then multiplying by the number of tricks in the combo.
New tricks
- Natas Spin - Character can spin his or her board on objects such as fire hydrants and garbage cans
- Tagging - Character can "tag" (using a custom tag from the "tag editor") a wall by pressing a button when not near a rail. Can also be done as part of a combo.
- Destruction Bonus - Character is rewarded with a small bonus for destroying objects.
- Throwing Objects - Character can pick up objects, such as spraypaint cans and Mardi Gras beads, to throw at non-player characters.
Story
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 starts where the previous game left off—with the player character having recently gotten sponsored as a pro skater. He is kidnapped by Tony Hawk and Bam Margera to compete in an underground competition: the World Destruction Tour. The winning team gets props, and the losing team foots the bill for the competition. Along the way, he stops in locations such as Boston, Berlin, and Australia.
As he continues his journey, the player character is confronted by the filmmaker Nigel Beaverhausen who wants to make a video of the player character's shenanigans, while Tony and Bam play tricks on Nigel to keep him out of their hair. When the characters find out how much the tour is going to cost, they decide to make a deal with Nigel wherein he is able to make a video of their exploits in exchange for paying for the entire tour.
At the end of the game, the player character ends up in an underground skatepark named Skatopia, based on an actual skatepark in Ohio. The player must complete goals equaling the usual amount of points. Then, Bam decides to blow the park "sky high". The player must activate various explosive devices by tricking off of them. Then the player must escape from the burning skate park, saving as many dogs as possible along with him/her. When the player successfully completes the "escape" challenge Tony Hawk's team wins the World Destruction Tour. Nigel is presented with his "tape" which he airs live. The tape actually contains footage of Phil Margera on the toilet. Nigel is ruined.
Major characters
- Nigel Beaverhausen:
The teams meet Beaverhausen on the Berlin stage of their tour in which Nigel makes them an offer. After getting a big no from them (in the form of being
duct-taped to his own truck), he starts selling out videos with unauthorized footage of the competition. In Australia, Team Hawk gets their revenge by making some angry Aussies wedgie him with a crane. In New Orleans he finally makes his deal: He pays for the entire tour in exchange of an exclusive video of the event. But in the end of the game he is only being given a tape of
Phil Margera on the toilet and getting his pants pulled down on international
television. Also known as the "old beaverbanger" (as Bam calls him).
- Eric Sparrow:
The main character's rival is back in THUG2. He is a member of Bam's team, but after Spain, they swap him with the player's skater. After the completion of Berlin stage, the swap is undone and he is gladly welcomed back into Tony's crew, who were getting annoyed by Eric's shameful performance. Sparrow is kicked out of the competition after the Australia stage, in a very "Beaverhausen" way, because Nigel fell from the crane over him, just when he looked up to see what was falling. In the ending of the game, newscaster Hugh Jass says Sparrow underwent plastic surgery after the incident.
- Bam Margera:
While Tony Hawk is depicted in the game as the good guy,
Jackass veteran Bam Margera is depicted as a loose cannon, playing the immature and outrageous pranks he is renowned for. As is the case in Margera's
Jackass spin-off
Viva La Bam, his favorite victim is his own father, Phil Margera. Margera's prominence in
THUG 2 can be attributed to the level of fame and popularity he had achieved through
Jackass and
Viva La Bam.

Classic mode
In response to longtime fans' dissatisfaction with the format introduced in
Tony Hawk's Underground, Neversoft added a classic mode, which allows players to skate through both new and remade classic levels in the traditional 10-goal, two-minute time limit mode that was present in
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, complete with the stat points scattered around all the levels. In classic mode, the player chooses from one or two levels in which to attempt to complete enough goals to advance. All of the "remade" levels are accessible only through "Classic Mode" although once unlocked, it is possible to use them in any mode except "Story Mode".
Remix
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix for the
PlayStation Portable is largely identical to the console and PC versions, but adds four entirely new levels. Also, much of the voice acting and cutscenes were removed due to space and battery consumption issues.
THUG2 Remix was ported by
Shaba Games, previously responsible for porting
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 to
PlayStation.
