Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is the fourth released in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game series. It was developed by Neversoft and published by Activision for the GameCube, Game Boy, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. In 2003 it was published for the PC.
The game is a departure from the previous three games' career mode, in which you had a set amount of time in order to find and complete goals. THPS4 instead featured a career mode more similar to free-skate mode, in which there was no time limit to explore the level. This career mode would be later seen as the Story modes of Tony Hawk: Underground series and American Wasteland.

New Tricks
Skitching
To
skitch, the player must press
Up on the controller to allow the skater to grab onto the bumper of a vehicle. This trick involves balance. It is also possible to switch between the left and right side of the vehicle, meant for dodging obstacles that could knock the player out of the skitch. Jumping or pressing
Down while skitching will end the skitch.
Spine transfer
A spine transfer is done on two quarter pipes placed back to back. One of the quarter pipes is used to gain height. When in the air, the player can press the
R2 (
PlayStation 2) or
L and
R buttons (
GameCube) to land on the other quarter pipe.
Freestyle tricks
Many
freestyle tricks (flatland) were introduced in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 as regular tricks, as opposed to some of them being special tricks in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Examples include the
casper, anti-casper, handstand, etc.
Advancing
To advance in the level, there are certain goals to complete. You do this in career mode. The goals start off easy enough, for beginning players. As you advance, the goals get harder as you gain more skill. For a total of 190 goals, this can keep you busy for awhile.
Online play
As of
January 1,
2006 the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 servers have been shut down forever.
To go online with
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, you need a
PlayStation 2, a network adaptor, and an Internet connection.
If you have broadband, you can host a room of up to 8 people. If you only have dial-up, you can host a room up to 3 people, but you can still join any room. The games you can play online with other people are as follows:
- Trick Attack: The goal is to get as many points as possible. Whoever has the most points at the end wins.
- Graffiti: If you do a trick on an object, that object changes color to your color. If a player does a BIGGER trick on it that is worth more points, they steal that object, or tag, from you. The most tags win!
- Combo Mambo: Almost the same as Trick Attack, except the highest amount of points done in one combo.
- King of the Hill: There's a crown out there, somewhere. Follow the arrow on your screen, until you find it. Once you find it, you need to run from the other players. They will always know where you are, as they all have an arrow that points directly to you. To make it fair, you are slowed down, so they can catch you.
- Slap: Basically, the goal of the game is to just hit each other. The faster skater will hit, so don't slow down for one second!
