Todd Solondz (born October 15 1959) is an American writer/director known for his controversial films. He was born in Newark, New Jersey.
Solondz broke into the industry with his 1995 film Welcome to the Dollhouse, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The dark comedy about an unpopular 7th grader also jumpstarted the career of Heather Matarazzo.
He continues to make controversial films that include topics such as abortion, rape, incest, pedophilia, suicide, depression, and murder. Both Happiness and Palindromes were Not Rated to avoid the NC-17 rating (although Happiness was originally rated NC-17). Storytelling had censored one scene with Selma Blair to get an R rating; it appears uncensored outside the U.S., as well as on DVD. Perhaps for these reasons, his films tend to be unsuccessful at the box office, even though he is praised by critics.
Solondz received his undergraduate degree in English from Yale and attended New York University's (NYU) Graduate MFA Program in film and television, but did not complete a degree.
