"Time after Time" was the second commercially released solo single by singer Cyndi Lauper. It is to date her highest charting and most commercially successful single worldwide. It hit the top ten in fourteen countries: #1 in Canada, Chile, Japan and the United States (where it was certified gold); #2 in Israel; #3 in New Zealand and the United Kingdom; #4 in Australia; #5 in Austria, the Netherlands and Italy; #6 in Germany; #7 in Switzerland; and #9 in France.
Though "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" song is considered to be Lauper's signature song, she did not write it. However, she, along with Rob Hyman of The Hooters wrote "Time After Time", which is widely considered a classic ballad of the 1980s, and is still played frequently on adult contemporary radio. An accompanying music video aired heavily on MTV and featured Lauper in a running-away-from-home scenario as she parted ways with a lover and took off in a train.
The single has been released in over twenty-nine variations across the world, the most common being a two track 7" vinyl single (with varying covers) and a four track 12" vinyl single (also with varying covers).
The song has been covered, either in live performance or on a recording, by at least 97 different artists including Miles Davis, Everything But the Girl, Eddie Money, The Hooters, Matchbox Twenty, INOJ, Blaque, Eva Cassidy, Willie Nelson, Uncle Kracker, gandharvas, Joey McIntyre, Nichole Nordeman, Patti LuPone, Sugar Ray, and Spoken.
It was also played in the 'dance scene' of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and Napoleon Dynamite (Jared Hess, 2004).
Mark Williams and Tara Morice performed the song in the Strictly Ballroom soundtrack (in the scene where Scott and Fran dance on the rooftop).
