Thousand Hills State Park sits to the west of Kirksville in Adair County, Missouri. The park is 3,215 acres and includes a lake which the city created in 1950s by damming Big Creek for the purpose of increasing the city's supply of fresh water. The park offers recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and nature study, and it has cabins and dining lodges. The park also has a shelter which displays petroglyphs left behind 1,500 years ago by American Indians.
