Thomas Riley was a British tattoo artist and inventor working in London in the late 1800s. The first patent of a tattoo machine using an electromagnetic coil was registered in London on Dec. 28th 1891. Riley's machine used a single coil and was a modified door bell assembly contained in a brass box.
