The New Lassie was an American television series which aired for two seasons with production beginning in 1989. The program featured Lassie, the rough collie character who debuted in the 1943 movie Lassie Come Home, and starred in several more movies and Lassie, a long-running television series which aired from 1954 to 1974.
Bob Weatherwax, son of Rudd Weatherwax, the original handler of Pal, the dog who first played the famous collie, handled one of Pal's descendants for the 1989 series. Other guest stars with a Lassie past included Roddy McDowall, who had starred in the first movie Lassie Come Home (1943) and June Lockhart, who had starred in the 1945 movie Son of Lassie, and the television series (as Timmy's mother after 1957). Former child actor Tommy Rettig, who had played Jeff Miller in the early years of the original television series (later syndicated as Jeff's Collie), also did a guest appearance in an episode.
The Lassie character is one of only three dogs to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (the others being Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin).
