The Irascible Professor is an online journal (ezine, webzine) of commentary on issues relating to education in the United States. It began publication in 1999. While the majority of the commentaries published in The Irascible Professor address substantive issues in either K-12 education or higher education, the journal also occasionally publishes humorous articles on education and reviews of books on educational topics.

The journal accepts no advertising; nor does it accept support from corporate, union, or foundation sources.

The International Standard Serial Number for The Irascible Professor is 1527-3849.

Editor and Publisher


The editor and Publisher of The Irascible Professor is Dr. Mark H. Shapiro, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Cal State Fullerton. Dr. Shapiro has held both teaching and administrative positions at Cal State Fullerton, and has served as program officer in the predecessor to the Education and Human Resources Directorate of the National Science Foundation.
