The Format is a rock band formed by Arizona natives Sam Means and Nate Ruess. They chose their name to make fun of the music industry's inclination towards a cookie-cutter "format" for a hit. Despite this critique of the music industry, the duo's first single, aptly titled "The First Single," from their five song demo, The EP, became locally popular and led to the two signing with Elektra Records in 2002. Their first studio album, Interventions and Lullabies, was released in October 2003 and was very successful around the Phoenix area, selling close to 50,000 records.
They released a second EP with sister label Atlantic Records entitled Snails in April 2005. Although this record was not a conventional mass release, it can purchased at any of their performances, or with a copy of their full length album Interventions and Lullabies at select record stores. It has also been released on iTunes for those who prefer the digital medium. Nate and Sam are currently recording a second full-length album tentatively called Dog Problems. They have announced a release date for Dog Problems on their spring tour: July 11th.
The band was recently dropped from their record label.
However, recently, many of The Format's singles have been used on the MTV hit television show The Real Orange County, such as "The First Single" and "Wait Wait Wait". They have been slowly been creeping into the commercial music world.
They also performed at Priya and Divya Kothapalli's party, which was featured on MTV's hit reality TV show, My Super Sweet Sixteen.
On May 18, 2006; a good two months before the scheduled street date for Dog Problems, the band announced (via a bulletin on Myspace) that the album was available on their managements website. Here is said bulletin:
"We've decided to put the entire new album up for purchase digitally. You can now purchase Dog Problems in its entirety here, for just $7.99! You can also get the songs individually for only $.79 a piece.
Love, The Format"
