The Crypt School is a grammar school for boys in the city of Gloucester, England, founded in 1539 by John and Joan Cooke. The original school was part of St Mary de Crypt church in Southgate St and the schoolroom can still be seen there. Later, the school moved to Greyfriars and in 1943, to its current site at Podsmead. It has a strong academic reputation and great sporting tradition, particularly in rugby union and field hockey. Current education changes in Gloucestershire now ensure the survival of the Crypt as a grammar school.
__TOC__
As one of Gloucester's four grammar schools (two boys, two girls), the school's results are consistently extremely high (particularly at GCSE level - with 95% gaining 5 A*-C passes). The results at all levels are far in excess of the national average, and also the average of the Gloucester LEA which happens to be one of the most successful in the country.
Stat per annos domus crescens
Fortiorque fit senescens,
Laeta prole revirescens
Dum labuntur saecula.
Viget prisca fide plena,
Viget nova spe serena.
Vivat schola Cryptiensis,
Vivat in perpetuum!
