Australia
The
Comedy Channel is a subscription television channel available on
Foxtel,
Austar and
Optus Television. Partly owned by
Granada Television and
Foxtel, the Comedy Channel is the only channel in Australia specifically dedicated to comedy; primarily featuring
stand-up,
sit-coms,
animated comedy,
sketch comedy and
talk shows.
Programming
The majority of Comedy Channel programming is made internationally particularly from America's Comedy Central Channel, although some Australian product is available. Some Comedy Channel programming includes:
USA
The Comedy Channel was an all-comedy network owned by
Time Warner, which merged in 1991 with
Viacom's
HA! to become
Comedy Central. The format prior to the merger included several original and unconventional programs such as
Onion World and
Mystery Science Theater 3000, as well as laid-back variety/talk shows hosted by
stand-up comedians, including
Night After Night with Allan Havey and
The Higgins Boys and Gruber, the latter of whom performed sketches in between showings of vintage serials like
Supercar and
Clutch Cargo. The standard format for these shows usually involved the various hosts introducing clips culled from the acts of stand-up comedians as well as classic comedies of the
1970s and
1980s, such as
Young Frankenstein and
Kentucky Fried Movie, presented in a style similar to music videos.
UK
The Comedy Channel was a
UK subscription television channel during the early
1990s.
The channel was carried on
Sky and mainly featured
US imports but also screened a various
BBC sitcoms. The channel eventually lost the broadcast rights to the BBC shows because they were earmarked for the new
UK Gold channel. As a result its audience figures declined and it closed a few months later. Some years later, the completely unrelated Paramount Channel became
Paramount Comedy Channel, eventually developing a much more varied programme line-up than its predecessor.
